Backing up Bootcamp (windows 7/8) and Restoring it on a new disk using the Windows Default Backup Method

Pros
Cons

Steps
  1. Use the default windows 7 backup tool in control panel to create a system backup image (VHD file)
  2. Create the System Restore CD when Windows asks you
  3. Backup Mac OSX with the method you prefer
  4. Wipe out the harddrive, and reinstall Mac OSX
  5. Use Bootcamp to create a Windows Partition
  6. Insert Windows System Restore CD and do a System restore from image !NOTE! it will say something about wiping out the entire disk, it won't (MAC OSX will still be bootable after the restore)

Resyncing the GPT and MBR is optional, but if the partition table is not synced mac osx won't be able to see the BOOTCAMP partition properly (it will appear as FAT32 and the volume will appear blank), and problems will occur with software that envoles the hard disk (e.g. PGP won't be able to encrypt the disk)

Follow the step by step instructions here to resync the hybrid partition. Or read the following discussion here adressing the problem.
